They Call it Progress

We were in DC last Saturday with our jr. highers working at Marvin Gaye Park in South East. As we worked our friend Kenny at Washington Parks and People pointed out that many of the projects in the area (government housing) are being torn down so that town houses can be built. Unfortunately this means that thousands of people in the government housing will now have nowhere to go…so what is the retribution? They are given first dibs on buying the new houses - most of which will be from 1/4 to 1/2 a million dollars! Thanks for the offer…what a joke. So in the name of “progress” or “development” for the city, thousands of people are being kicked out of their homes and offered no place to go. Then we wonder why there’s a homeless problem in the city. Give me a break, I thought this was the nation’s capitol? I thought this was the land of opportunity? I thought our government would actually help poeple in their own backyard? Guess I was wrong…maybe we’re all wrong about our government’s capacity to administer justice, especially if they don’t administer it in thier own backyard!
