Bitter Sweet

us-vamch.gifYesterday I had the priveledge of going down to my hometown (Madison County, Virginia) and watching my old team wrestle the team that I helped out with last year.  I admit I didn’t know who to cheer for!  I cheered for my home team to win the match, but I cheered for individuals from Briar Woods - the team I’ve helped out with in the past.

MadisonCOHS.jpgIt’s funny because when I wrestled at Madison, we were a small school (single A) and I remember wanting so desperately to beat any and all double or triple A schools that we wrestled.  They would always come to our mountain home with all the nicest equipment, having trained in state of the art facilities with amazing weight rooms and wrestling rooms.  We didn’t have a wrestling room.  We rolled our mats out every day in the cafeteria, of all places, to practice then rolled them back up - every day.  We wore old polyester uniforms from the 70’s or 80’s (I graduated in ‘96).  We had sweatpants and sweatshirts for warm-up jerseys and at our home matches we didn’t even have an announcer.

So, kudos to you Madison for beating not only Briar Woods, but winning the whole tourney that included 10 double A schools and only 2 single A schools.  ahhh the glory!

  1. The only reason Madison won was because of the “home town” referees. I guess it’s in your favor to host the touney.
