Forgiveness
CS Lewis - “we all agree that forgiveness is a beautiful thing, until we have to practice it.”
Anne Borrowdale - “forgiveness, then, is not some pious hope, but something gritty, rough-edged, an act of will, a recognition of pain, a genuine gift.”
Miroslav Volf - “my thought was pulled in two different directions by the blood of the innocent crying out to God and by the blood of God’s Lamb offered for the guilty. How does one remain loyal both to the demand of the oppressed for justice and to the gift of forgiveness that the Crucified offered to the perpetrators?”
I’ve been studying Philemon in preparation for a sermon I’m giving soon. The type of forgiveness that God requires is far beyond what I could have thought or imagined. In Philemon I’m seeing for the first time that now that I am in Christ, I’m called to forgive with an intensity that I doubt I’m able to muster. Lord help us.
