Church Is

Wow.  I just read a great article in the Denver Post - Here - about city officials working with churches to stop gang related violence.  We just talked with our youth group about what the church is.  We decided that saying that you’re “going to church” doesn’t really make sense.  Because in Scripture church is never a place.  It’s always a thing.  It’s an organic community of people devoted to Jesus and his kingdom - not a place and certainly not a building.  What if all Christians everywhere stopped talking about the church as a place and started talking about it as a living, breathing, thing?  Would the outside world view “the church” any differently?  I think that people may start to wonder, “what is this thing called the church?”  The answer would then be found in what the church does not in where the church meets.  Maybe we’d even see more of the above from Denver if the church was seen as an active, living thing rather than merely a place. huh.
