A Brief History of Wrestling

Wrestling greek.jpgWith the possible exception of track and field, wrestling is the most ancient athletic event.  The first recorded wrestling match took place in the Greek Olympics in 708 BC.  However cave drawings from France depicting wrestlers have been dated to nearly 15,000 years ago.  Wrestling was the hallmark event in both Greek and Roman events.  However, the Roman form was much less brutal than the Greek form (no tap-outs, there were illegal holds, etc…).

Wrestling held a high place in early American settlements as well.  Colonists would compete at fairs and festivals.  The Native Americans also had a strong wrestling tradition that developed indepentantly of the European form.

The first organized national wrestling tournament in the US was held in New York in 1888. In 1908 the first NCAA wrestling championship was held.
