So Elizabeth and I saw “Bridge to Terabithia” last night (Thanks to the Lovett’s for babysitting so we could go out!).  What a great movie!  We laughed, cried, and best of all were reminded of a simpler time when we were young’uns.  Though I must admit that I was longing for more special affects and for Jess and Leslie to spend more time in Terabithia, it was still a great movie with themes about friendship, regret, parenting, choices, even talk of heaven and hell.

Terabithia is a magical place where you don’t have to worry about things like bullys and mean parents.  In Terabithia, anything and everything is possible.  [Spoiler alert: stop reading if you're going to go see it and don't know the ending!]  Leslie opens her friend Jess’ eyes to a whole new world in Terabithia.  At first he is hesitant and can’t quite “see” what Leslie sees.  Eventually he comes around and they experience a whole new world together.  One day, however, Jess goes to the city with his teacher and leaves Leslie behind.  Leslie swings on the rope that is the only way into Terabithia and tragically, the tree falls down and she dies.  The tree, however, makes a bridge across the river, opening up Terabithia, presumably, to anyone who wishes to go there.  Jess leads his little sister into Terabithia where she becomes the princess.

So, we were talking in the car on the way home and we were struck how Leslie showed Jess the way to Terabithia, opened his eyes to a new kingdom (that’s actually what she called it).  Then, through her death, a bridge was made so that anyone could now enter the kingdom.  Sound familiar?  The whole thing was dripping with the gospel message.  Jesus shows us a new way to live, opens our eyes to a new kingdom that we can be a part of, then he died so that we all may enter it.  Thank you Disney for another great one for the family.55815_bp.jpg

These guys fly around saying, “dead meat, dead meat!”  Just like one of the bullies that picked on Jess.
