Pulling a Truck

lorry_pull.jpgSo the other day I was watching the 2004 Met-Rx “World’s Strongest Man” competition (yes I was somewhat bored with the normal daytime television shows! and I was feeding Jackson).  These guys are insanely huge - yes, even bigger than me! :)  In one of the competitions they are tied to a truck (a BIG truck) and have to pull it, using a rope, some defined distance, and the winner is the man who can finish the course in the fastest time.  Every muscle in their body strains to pull the trucks, which must weigh thousands of pounds considering my jeep weighs around 1800 lbs!  If you’ve never watched a World’s Strongest Man competition, I’d highly reccomend it.  Fascinating.filiou.jpg

But what really struck me was that I started to think about people in general.  What “trucks” are we pulling?  Why are we pulling them?  What is the weight that we’re straining against with every muscle in our bodies?  Finances, worry, keeping up with the Jones’, peer pressure, pressure to succeed, trying to get A’s in my classes, pressure to be a good dad or husband, and doubting myself.  All of these add up to a lot on our trucks.  So what’s on your “truck?”  What are you straining against?

Then I started thinking about Jesus, and how his offer to accept his yoke and his burden is always available.  It is an offer for you whether you’ve never even heard of Jesus or whether you have a close relationship with him.  If Jesus were sitting in the crowd with his disciples at the Met-rx World’s Strongest Man competition, I think he’d say something like this:

“Come to me all of you who are weary and pulling a truck.  I will give you rest.  I will cut the rope that ties you to that truck.  Whatever it is that is weighing down on you, come to me and you can let it go.”
